Basics
Viruses are essentially nucleic acid chains, DNA or RNA, enclosed in a capsule to protect them from the environment. Viruses do not have they structures necessary to replicate themselves. For this reason, they form a parasitic relationship with living cells. Using one of many mechanisms, viruses incorporate their DNA into the genome of the host cell and uses the cell's organelles to manufacture new viruses.
